Marcelo's voice in Marcelo in the Real World is one that stays with me long after I've read this novel. It's written in first person, yet Marcelo's habit of referring to himself in the third person as "Marcelo" distances me, as a reader, from this complex character. How do you feel about this choice of voice? How do you react to it as you read this intriguing novel?

omg... this is sort of random, but the guidence counclers at my school talk in third person too! after you get used to it, it doesn't bother you anymore. i once asked them why... they said that it "helped people feel better about themselves" so far it's only helped me to resist the temptation to kick people in the shin...
